The Poison-maker

Travelled miles that day
Gold savanna sun to shadows of darkest green
A day of such beauty
I have not seen before
The air gleaming like the start of the world.
On the edge of the forest
Hawks hanging in the blue heaven

– Ian McDonald, from ‘The Poison-maker’ (‘The Heinemann Book of Caribbean Poetry)
